Harmful Chemicals are Destroying Your Hormones. Here’s What You Can Do.

Pensive woman in bed

What we eat is crucial to building balanced hormones, but what’s equally important are our beauty products, toiletries and household cleansers!

Our toiletries and cleansers tend to get overlooked, yet the play a crucial part in causing painful periods and serious hormonal imbalances because of the harmful chemicals they contain called endocrine disrupters.

Endocrine disrupters are chemicals that interfere with the production, release, transport, metabolism, or elimination of the body’s natural hormones, and they’re seriously bad news bears for all of human kind. These endocrine disruptors mimic your hormones, and cause you to be estrogen dominant.

About 90% of the clients I see are estrogen dominant, and this is due to the increasingly toxic world we live in.

(This is why it’s imperative to do at least one cleanse a year to get rid of built up toxins like glyphosate in the body.)

Signs of estrogen dominance are painful periods, bloating, breast tenderness, irritability, moodiness, PMS, fatigue, weight gain, short luteal phase, infertility.

The majority of toiletries and household cleansing products on the shelves today contain xenoestrogens. These xenoestrogens mimic the functions of our natural estrogens and interrupt our hormone balance creating symptoms such as heavy periods, PMS, estrogen dominance, fibroids, etc.

Our skin has tiny pores all over the body, which are like tiny mouths after all! So it’s important to use natural and chemical free products! It’s also important to use household cleansers that do not have harmful chemicals as well.

Balance Your Hormones by Avoiding these Chemicals:

non toxic

Glyphosate

Glyphosate has been shown to cause cancer, research is linking it to autism, and the EU deemed it so dangerous they banned it for use in crops. My hope is that one day soon it will be banned in the U.S., but for now as consumers we must be proactive to avoid ingesting it.

Most tampons and pads are made from GMO cotton, so they contain glyphosate, and you do not want this stuff inside your vagina! Instead, opt for a menstrual cup like SAALT, or period panties like THINX, or organic, non-bleached tampons or pads.

Bisphenol A (BPA)

To avoid BPA we must avoid foods packaged in aluminum and plastic (BPA free is okay but aim for glass or stainless steel when possible). Always opt for glass Tupperware, and only drink out of stainless steel, glass, or BPA free plastic water bottles.

Phthalates and Parabens

The products you use to clean your bathroom and household are potential stressors to your health. New scientific research shows that many of the chemicals found in everyday house-cleaning products are bio-accumulative and very toxic, which means that once in your system, they stay in your system and allow for increased free radical damage, which makes you more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases and cancers.

Ready to throw things out now?

Find your bleach products, Comet, Ajax, Windex, Lysol, air fresheners, Glade Plug- Ins, cute toilet bowl cleaners, and talc-based baby power. Throw them in a garbage bag and toss them out!

Safe Household Cleansing Alternatives:

cleaners

  • Hydrogen peroxide in place of Windex
  • White vinegar instead of bleach (it’s a great grease cutter)
  • Dr. Bronner’s

White Vinegar All Purpose Cleaning Recipe:

  1. In a spray bottle fill with half white vinegar and half water
  2. Put in 15 drops essential orange oil and 10 drops tea tree oil

Safe Toiletry and Beauty Product Alternatives

Enlight20

  • Makeup: the average women puts 5 pounds of makeup on her face in a year so it’s crucial that you’re using a chemical free brand such as Beauty Counter.
  • Lotions: Throw them away! Instead try extra virgin coconut oil with essential oils.
  • Toothpaste: swap for natural brands like Earthpaste and Jason’s.
  • Deodorant with antiperspirant: ditch the antiperspirant and switch to a natural deodorant such as Oars and Alps. Their deodorant offers excellent coverage, and I love their Deep Sea Glacier scent!
  • Bodywash- I’m a fan of Oars and Alps activated charcoal soap in peppermint. It also contains spirulina and shea butter so it leaves your skin feeling smooth. It also makes for a great face wash as the activated charcoal is exfoliating.

As you can see, one must be proactive to reducing exposure to these hormone disrupting chemicals. But the good news is if you support your body, it will support you!

3 Steps to Look Younger and Increase Your Energy Levels NOW.

pexels-photo-57851

Two Questions for YOU:

  1. How many times have you suffered from aches and pains, and quickly reached for the bottle of Advil?
  2. Would you like to look younger than your age for as long as possible AND have more energy? (Me! Me! Me!)

Well, guess what? The two of these things DO NOT go together! In the body we have something called mitochondria. We are only born with a certain amount of mitochondria, and after the age of 40-45 it automatically starts going into mitochondrial dysfunction, meaning they slowly decline in number. However, in many people today it starts degenerating earlier due to toxins, stress, and poor diet that create INFLAMMATION.

So why is mitochondria so important and what the heck does it have to do with staying young? AND if inflammation causes it to degenerate, wouldn’t Advil be the magic pill to stop it?

Mitochondria is the body’s battery. When it starts wearing down, then the body starts to wear out, resulting in less energy. In addition, impaired mitochondria means less oxygen supply to your body, and this accelerates the aging process. Think about how oils go bad as they oxidize. Well, when your mitochondria degenerates, YOU start to oxidize!!

But did you know that Advil (also known by its generic name ibuprofen) KILLS your mitochondria?! Not to mention your gut flora as well.

So what to use instead of Advil? And how to cut back on inflammation in the first place?

3 Steps to Beat Inflammation and Regenerate Your Mitochondria For a Younger Looking You:

1. TURMERIC!!! fullsizerender-17

Turmeric is Mother Nature’s best anti-inflammatory weapon. I encourage you to get as much of it as possible. I like to add it to my warm lemon water in the morning, and to my herbal tea at night.

Now, it won’t kill the pain within 30 minutes like Advil, but after a few weeks of taking turmeric daily, the inflammation will go down in your body, and you will not need the Advil. You see, turmeric is getting to the root of the problem versus just putting a bandaid over it like Advil. (To find out more about turmeric and the recipe for a “Turmeric Latte” (one of my favorite drinks) then click HERE. )

2. Take fish oil (or if vegan, algae oil). Just make sure you get one with a high EPA/DHA content, and take it everyday.

3. Cut out inflammatory foods like gluten, refined grains, dairy, and vegetable oils.

9 Things You Can Do NOW to Get Rid of Cellulite

Cellulite. All women have it. And if they say they don’t they are lying. Even the magazines are lying with all the Photoshop used these days. But the truth is, although the amount of cellulite you have can rely heavily on your genetics, you also have the power to turn off some of these genes with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

So stop blaming your mama and start following these nine steps today!

1. Stop eating vegetable oil! ASAP.

According to the LA Laker’s nutritionist, Dr. Katherine Shanahan, vegetable oil spreads out your fat and makes it have a more liquid like texture, thus being prone to cellulite. It also damages your collagen (the stuff that makes your skin tight, so pretty freaking important!). Normal fat should be compacted and have a healthy amount of collagen, which keeps skin smooth and dimple free.

So if you are cooking with canola ,soy, or any other type of vegetable oil, then I urge you to switch to a healthy alternative like olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil.

Scary fact- I bet you thought cellulite was just for adults. Well, guess again. Some babies who drink baby formula are starting to get it, as many formulas on the market today are made with canola oil.

2. Dry brushing.

Dry brushing restores radiance and elasticity to your skin by stimulating circulation, eliminating toxins, rejuvenating the nervous system, and removing dead skin. When dry brushing, always brush towards the heart. The best time to dry brush is in the morning before you shower.

3. Drink half your weight in water in ounces.

Staying hydrated helps to eliminate toxins. Yes, those same pesky toxins that are creating fatty deposits, causing cellulite. So find a method that works for you to keep track of how much water you are drinking. Perhaps set a reminder on you smart phone every few hours to drink a glass. I like to drink half a liter first thing in the morning.

4. Exercise!

This is crucial, folks! Focus on squats and leg lifts that will tone. Yoga and Pilates are great, as are high intensity interval training exercises.

5. Drink warm water with lemon first thing in the morning.

Lemon water cleanses toxins from the blood, which keeps skin clear. They are also high in vitamin C, which helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemons also help flush out unwanted materials because they increase the rate of urination in the body. This not only flushes out toxins, but keeps your urinary tract healthy.

6. Eat REAL, WHOLE foods.

You will not have lumps of toxins gathering on your fatty deposits in your body if you are not eating junk food. A good rule to go by is if the food you are eating has more than five ingredients, it’s not real food. Stay away from hydrogenated oils, artificial sweeteners, “natural” flavors, and ingredients you can’t pronounce.

7. Massage with coconut oil.

Massage areas with cellulite with coconut oil after you shower, as the fat in the oil binds with toxins and draws it out of your bloodstream. Be wary of the special “cellulite removing” lotions for sale at the pharmacy! These are loaded with chemicals. If you have used them and seen results, it’s not the lotion that did this; it was your action of massaging the area. So do yourself a favor and use natural coconut oil to avoid applying toxic chemicals on your body. Also, if it is in your budget, consider getting a couple of professional massages a month.

8.Take Hot/Cold Showers.

Detox the body by alternating between hot and cold water at the end of your shower. At the end of your shower put on the cold water for 30 seconds to a minute, then switch to hot for 30 seconds to a minute. Repeat two more times. Not only will this help with cellulite, but it will facilitate weight loss as well.

8. Take Epsom salt baths.

Epsom salts draw out all those unwanted toxins!

I have been doing all of these things for some time now and I have personally found success. It’s amazing how eating healthy foods and exercising can make such a crucial difference. At 30, my skin looks better than when I was in my early 20’s because of my healthy lifestyle. Seriously!

So give these tips a whirl and please let me know how it turns out in the comments section below. And if you’re looking for a REBOOT to flush out those toxins, lose 5-15 pounds and diminish cellulite, I encourage you to sign up for my 20-Day Hormone Reset Detox Program!
